The driver of a motorhome involved in the death of 29-year-old Lavon Brian Battle has been named but has not been charged. The incident occurred when the motorhome reportedly hit Battle, resulting in his death and injuring two officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on the I-485 ramp at Mt. Holly Road.

The fatal accident took place on Thursday shortly after 8:15 a.m. when police were responding to a report of a stolen vehicle on the shoulder of I-485 at Mt. Holly Road. Two hours later, while they were investigating, an unrelated motorhome collided with two police cars and struck Battle, who had reported the stolen vehicle.

Battle was pronounced dead at the scene, while one officer was trapped in his vehicle and required extrication, and another officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. On Friday, police identified 29-year-old Battle as the victim who died. A press release indicated that neither of the officers sustained serious injuries.

CMPD Major Dave Butler stated that Battle was not inside a vehicle when he was struck.

“Both of the officers were inside their vehicles,” Butler said. “The individual who was struck and killed was outside the vehicles speaking to one of the officers.”
