Eddie McCarthy was catching up on the news when he spotted a familiar face—one of his former high school geometry students, Roman McCormick. Roman’s parents were desperately searching for a kidney donor for their 15-year-old son, who was battling stage 4 kidney disease. None of his relatives were a match, and time was running out.
McCarthy, a 35-year-old teacher at Whitmer Senior High School in Toledo, had no idea about Roman’s health struggles. But he always remembered him as a hardworking student. After seeing the heartfelt plea on TV, McCarthy decided to get tested—and discovered he was a match.
Without telling Roman’s parents, he moved forward with the process, believing that saving a life was worth any discomfort he might face. After months of testing, he got the official confirmation in June. When Roman’s parents found out who the anonymous donor was, they were overwhelmed with emotion.
Because of McCarthy’s selfless decision, Roman now has the chance to live a life free from dialysis. A true example of kindness, sacrifice, and the power of a teacher’s heart.
