AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) – A devastating house fire has claimed the life of a beloved Auburn handyman and injured his wife, who is recovering from her injuries at Piedmont Columbus Regional.

Friends have set up a gofundme page to help the familyHelp Rebuild Robin Spinks Welcher’s Life After Tragedy

The Lee County Coroner’s Office says Luke Welcher, 61, of Auburn was killed in the Sunday night fire. The family tells WRBL his wife Robin, 60, suffered severe injuries. Robin had just been released from the hospital after spending several weeks there recovering from a horrible vehicle crash. Mr. Welcher was transported to ADFS Montgomery Medical Facility for a postmortem examination.

Fire Chief John Lankford says crews arrived at the fire Sunday, Aug. 11, around 10:40, and observed heavy smoke and flames. Rescue operations were immediately initiated, and two unconscious occupants, a 61-year-old male and a 60-year-old female, were removed through a bedroom window. Life-saving measures were administered on the scene. The male was transported to East Alabama Health, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The female was taken to Piedmont Hospital in serious but stable condition.

The fire was contained to its origin, with no further injuries or damage to nearby structures. The cause remains under investigation.

The couple’s neighbor tells WRBL the community is devastated. Mr. Welcher was affectionately known as “Cool Hand Luke” and, as the neighborhood’s handyman, was always willing to lend a helping hand.

We have spoken with the couple’s son and daughters on the scene. They ask the community to keep their parents in prayer during this difficult time. An account being set up to assist the family. I’ll share donation info as soon as I have it.
