Mistakes happen at every job and usually people try to notice them as quickly as possible in order to solve them. However, when it comes to movies, oftentimes mistakes can’t be corrected after the shooting is over. Or sometimes, the creators are consciously bending the truth a bit just to make the visuals a bit more appealing to the viewers. Luckily, there are people out there who will tear a movie apart and find even the slightest mistake.
1. The Spanish Princess (2019-2020)
The series The Spanish Princess is about the life of Catherine of Aragon, who was the first wife of Henry VIII. In one of the episodes, the queen has to protect her new land herself, so she wears armor. It’s possible that women would lead a military campaign or participate in battles. But there’s no evidence that, in the Middle Ages, women had special armor.
A breastplate that conformed to a woman’s body could be dangerous. The point of armor is to deflect a sword that would just slide on metal. And if someone used a breastplate like Catherine of Aragon did in the film, the results would be devastating.
2. House of Gucci (2021)
Everything is fantastic until Patrizia (Lady Gaga) takes a lipstick and writes her phone number on Maurizio’s (Adam Driver) windshield. But check the 5s carefully and see if they are the same — they change between shots.
3. War & Peace (2016)
The novel War & Peace is set at the beginning of the 19th century. But the dress we see on Anna Pavlovna Scherer couldn’t have appeared until the 1950s. The missing sleeve, naked back — none of this is accurate for the fashion of that time period.
4. Cruella (2021)
There is a factual error in a scene where Cruella drives her car in England. We all know that the driver’s seat in England is on the right side, not the left. Yet, Cruella is sitting on the left side.
5. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
If you have watched this fantastic movie, but haven’t noticed the difference in the sleeping positions of Frodo and Sam, then check it out again. In one scene, they’re sleeping side by side. Next, they’re perpendicular to each other — this is when Gollum appears and talks to us.
6. New Girl (2011-2018)
In New Girl, season 4, Jess’s nail polish disappears mid-scene.
7. Gladiator (2000)
Gladiator’s is set during the Roman Empire, around 180 CE, which doesn’t even come close to the period when the jeans were created or invented. If you watch closely, in the scene where Maximus is feeding a horse, you’ll see a crew member in a pair of blue jeans just between him and the horse.
8. Pirates of the Caribbean, 2003 — 2017
The Pirates of the Caribbean movies were set during the 1740s. In those times people had trouble with fruits. But we can see Granny Smith apples in the film (they didn’t exist until 1868) and sweet bananas (that appeared for the first time in 1836).
9. The Matrix (1999)
Sometimes, reflections give the best clue as to what’s going on during filming. If you want to learn more about it, watch the scene around 67 minutes in. When Neo opens the door to enter the Oracle’s house, a big camera lens is reflected on the doorknob.
10. Titanic (1997)
Remember the scene Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) is handcuffed, wearing suspenders over his shirt, and Rose (Kate Winslet) is trying to help him. There is an inter-shot where he turns his head away and closes his eyes while Rose raises the ax to break the cuffs off — notice his suspenders aren’t the same in this scene.
11. Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
In Mary Queen of Scots, Saoirse Ronan is wearing asymmetric earrings, which were non-existent in sixteenth-century Scotland.
12. The Godfather (1972)
Remember the scene in the beginning, when the Godfather, Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), is petting a cute kitten on his lap. Believe it or not — the script didn’t include the cat or that scene. The cat ended up on the set unexpectedly. Ultimately, it looked pretty good, and they decided to keep it.
13. Legends of the Fall (1994)
Trying to create a romantic look, costume designers ignored the historical facts. Brad Pitt’s character has beautiful blonde hair and facial hair but these things were unacceptable for the time period. More and more men were choosing to don big mustaches and short hair at this time.
