Most of us dream about taking a break from our mundane lives every once in a while to explore nature or take on an adventurous journey–an African safari or a day at the stock car racing track, for example. For many people, sky diving is on the top of their bucket list.
Skydiving is a thrilling experience of freefalling and parachuting from an aircraft. The feeling of jumping out of a plane is an adrenaline rush, and the view of the Earth below is truly breathtaking. Skydiving is an exciting and unique way to explore the world from a different perspective, and it is an experience that many of us think they should try at least once in their lifetime.
But imagine jumping from an airplane at an altitude of 25,000 feet without a parachute. The startling thought will make you cringe. But in 2016 a man made this jump willingly. Luke Aikins had one aim: to jump straight into a giant net suspended above the desert of Simi Valley, California.
Luke is a third-generation skydiver, but even for a professional, this looks scary. OK, Luke’s made over 18,000 jumps. OK, he’s a professional stunt diver and even provides advanced training to elite military special forces teams. And he spent two years planning and training for this jump.
But no one had ever done this before and it seems to me a little bit like asking a doctor to perform surgery with eyes closed! The total jump took 2 minutes max, from the air to hit the net. I am just glad he made it through. Watch the full video below and please leave us a Facebook comment to let us know what you thought!
