Leftists Cheer Brazil’s Crackdown on Free Speech Over Musk’s Resistance

In a bizarre twist of events that would make any reasonable person raise an eyebrow, Brazil has become the latest battleground in the ongoing global war on free speech. At the center of the storm is Brazilian Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is hammering down on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, all because Elon Musk has taken a principled stand against censorship. The chief culprit behind this outrage seems to be Musk’s refusal to silence supporters of former Presidente Jair Bolsonaro. What’s next, a Brazilian-style “Cancel Culture Olympics”?

Enter Keith Ellison, Minnesota’s Attorney General, who decided to throw in his two cents by tweeting a cheery “obrigado Brasil!” That’s right, thanking a foreign government for cracking down on free speech, all in the name of progressive ideals. Ellison’s post may have left a few confused, considering that nearly 5,000 replies—including a staggering 700 quoted replies—turned his expression of gratitude into an online roast. It’s almost as if the internet collectively decided that this was the perfect moment to put the toxic in “toxic ally.”

But Ellison is hardly the only leftist warming up to Brazil’s suppression of free speech. Former Bill Clinton aide Robert Reich decided to dip his toes into this murky water too, penning an op-ed that suggests global regulators should threaten Musk with arrest over the ‘lies and hate’ allegedly being disseminated on X. One might wonder if Reich believes in a free marketplace of ideas, or if he just thinks that different ideas should get a timeout.

This all comes against a backdrop where Democrats have consistently claimed to be the champions of freedom. Yet, their version of “freedom” appears to involve policing social media platforms and restricting the rights of those who dare to disagree, especially if they happen to lean conservative. The irony is rich: a party that yammers about rights takes an authoritarian approach when confronted with opposing views, particularly concerning education topics like sexual content for kids and late-term abortions.

Every time leftists like Ellison and Reich open their mouths, it’s like a broken record playing the same tired tune of censorship. One begins to wonder if there’s a secret liberal handbook dictating how to vilify anyone who doesn’t share their views. What remains clear, however, is that in this battle for speech, the “freedom fighters” of the left are more than willing to trample on the concept of free expression to push their agenda. Thus, one must ask: who truly threatens freedom in a world where support for Bolsonaro and a commitment to free speech lead to calls for punishment?
